The Chariton Valley News Press covers Salisbury, Keytesville, Marceline, Mendon, Brunswick and surrounding smaller communities. Our small, yet hardworking staff produces a weekly paper with a readership over 3,750 each week, and we haven’t even been printing for a year. Our advertising staff will work with your business not only to produce individual ads, but also to create advertising campaigns to alert readers, subscribers and other advertisers of your services and products. The Story The Chariton Valley News Press is the outcome of years of hard work and dream one Chariton Valley native had to give back to the community, which helped shape her. Laura Widmer, Salisbury, always knew she would return to her hometown, and as her retirement from Northwest Missouri University as an assistant professor drew near, she began to plan her future doing what she does best — journalism and teaching. On Aug. 12, 2008, the first issue of the News Press was delivered throughout the community. Sixth months into publication, subscriptions to the News Press quintupled, reaching nearly 1,000, not including individual newsstand sales, which reach about 400 a week. The small, yet hardworking staff of three full-time three part-time employees and one intern, serve five surrounding communities and schools, in addition to weekly editorials, features political news and neighborhood news. Widmer’s dream is now a reality, keeping one main goal in mind, “to celebrate the people and events of the Chariton Valley by providing local news, information and advertising in such a way that it fosters a sense of community and reflects the unique character of Chariton Valley. “Our pledge to you — readers, advertisers and subscribers — is to be a highly trusted and reliable source for news, features, sports and advertising each week. We strive to be a highly trusted and reliable source of news within the communities we serve.”
